Daniel Zalewski, Features Director, New Yorker, “National-Quality Work in Yale Publications,” 11/13/2014, 6 to 8 pm, Davenport College Common Room, commentary on Yale magazine articles following Davenport Master's Tea in same location

The editors of the Yale Globalist, Yale Herald, New Journal, and Yale Daily News Magazine (in collaboration with Fred Strebeigh and with Daniel Zalewski) invite everyone interested in nonfiction writing at Yale to attend a special dinner event, 6 pm to 8 pm, 11/13/2014, in the Davenport College Common Room (opposite entrance to the Davenport Dining Hall), during which Daniel Zalewski will discuss eight recent articles from those four publications.
Daniel Zalewski plans to address this question: "What would these articles need to do to rise to true national quality?" This event is designed to give campus writers a chance to hear a major national editor offer challenges intended to lift the quality of writing of all Yale students who wish to write for publication. Zalewski will discuss the following pieces, selected by the editors of their publications:
Catrin Dowd, "A Route to School Accompanied by Activists & Accordions: As EU Immigration Laws Change, The Experience of One Roma Family in Paris," Yale Globalist, 11/1/2014 <http://tyglobalist.org/in-the-magazine/theme/a-route-to-school-accompanied-by-activists-accordions/>.
Eric Stern, "The Need for Speed," Yale Daily News Magazine, 4/25/2014 <http://yaledailynews.com/magazine/2014/04/25/the-need-for-speed/>.
Hannah Schwarz, "Held Up: The U.S. moratorium on Vietnamese adoptions might just be hurting the children it is meant to protect," Yale Globalist, 11/1/2014 <http://tyglobalist.org/in-the-magazine/theme/held-up/>].
Ike Swetlitz, "Against the Tide," The New Journal, 2/16/2014 <http://www.thenewjournalatyale.com/2014/02/against-the-tide/>.
Isabelle Taft, "Loaded Questions," The New Journal, 4/28/2014 <http://www.thenewjournalatyale.com/2014/04/loaded-questions/>.
Jennifer Gersten, "We Don’t Talk About It," Yale Daily News Magazine, 11/7/2013 <http://yaledailynews.com/magazine/2013/11/07/we-dont-talk-about-it/>.
Katy Osborn, "Taking Stock," Yale Herald , 9/19/2014 <http://yaleherald.com/news-and-features/taking-stock/>.
Rachel Baker, "The Myth of Skinny-shaming," Yale Herald , 9/5/2014 <http://yaleherald.com/op-eds/the-myth-of-skinny-shaming/>.
Our plan for the dinner in the Davenport Common Room is simple and informal: Everyone is welcome, and those who wish to have dinner will get food from the dining hall and carry it the short distance to the common room. At this gathering, we hope everyone will plan to have a way to look at the eight articles--probably by carrying a tablet or laptop or printout. The texts of all articles, as well as individual URLs, are also posted in a single file at <https://webspace.yale.edu/engl454a/materials/other-materials.html> (available via Yale login).
Right before this 6-8 pm event in the Common Room, Daniel Zalewski will have been the guest at a master's tea in the same location, hosted by Davenport College Master Richard Schottenfeld, 4:15 to 5:30 pm, titled "Editing at the New Yorker," sponsored by Davenport College and the Poynter Fellowship, with brief information here <http://communications.yale.edu/poynter/2014/11/13/daniel-zalewski>.
