Thursday, 11/14/2019, 6 to 8 pm, Branford College Common Room,
commentary on Yale magazine articles

The editors of the Broad Recognition, Down, New Journal, Politic, Yale Daily News Magazine, Yale Globalist, Yale Herald, and Yale Scientific (in collaboration with Fred Strebeigh and with Henry Finder) invite members of their staffs and everyone interested in nonfiction writing at Yale to attend a special dinner event, 6 pm to 8 pm, 11/14/2019, in the Branford College Common Room (near the Branford Dining Hall), during which Henry Finder will discuss one recent article from each of those eight publications.
Henry Finder plans to address this question: "What would these articles need to do to rise to true national quality?"  This event is designed to give campus writers a chance to hear a major national editor offer challenges intended to lift the quality of writing of all Yale students who wish to write for publication.

Davenport College Master’s Tea, 248 York Street

James Bennet has served as editor-in-chief of The Atlantic since 2006. While studying at Yale, Bennet was editor-in-chief of The New Journal, and he then worked at The Washington Monthly and The New York Times before going to The Atlantic. During the fifteen-year-period he spent at the Times, Bennet served as White House correspondent, as Jerusalem bureau chief, and as a staff writer for the Times Magazine.

Berkeley College Master’s Tea, Monday, 11/5/12, 4 p.m, “Women’s Health and the Environment,” with Florence Williams

Florence Williams '89, founder of YSEC in 1987, is now a contributing editor at Outside Magazine as well as a freelance contributor to New York Times Magazine, Slate, Mother Jones, and more.  She is also the author of BREASTS: A Natural and Unnatural History (WW Norton, 2012), with information at <http://www.florencewilliams.com>.

Dinner in Branford College Dining Hall, Monday, 11/5/12, 6 p.m. with Florence Williams

YSEC is invited to join Florence Williams for dinner in Branford, either in the small dining room just beyond the fireplace at the far end of the dining hall or perhaps at a table near the fireplace.  This will be a fun chance to hear about the early days of the Yale Student Environmental Coalition and about the modern work of an environmental writer.

(The public events came the day before a visit to my F&ES 745 (environmental writing) seminar in the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. Florence had been a student in an early version of English 454.)
