Ilena Silverman, Features Editor, New York Times Magazine,
“National Quality Work in Yale Publications,”
11/2/2017, 6 to 8 pm, Branford College Common Room,
commentary on Yale magazine articles following Branford College Tea (4 to 5:30 pm)

The editors of the Politic, Yale Globalist, Yale Herald, Yale Scientific, New Journal, and Yale Daily News Magazine, in collaboration with Fred Strebeigh and with Ilena Silverman, invite members of their staffs and everyone interested in nonfiction writing at Yale to attend a special dinner event, 6 pm to 8 pm, 11/2/2017, in the Branford College Common Room (located below the Branford Dining Hall), during which Ilena Silverman will discuss one recent article from each publication.
Ilena Silverman plans to address this question: "What would these articles need to do to rise to true national quality?" This event is designed to give campus writers a chance to hear a major national editor offer challenges intended to lift the quality of writing of all Yale students who wish to write for publication.
Full information, including a list of articles, is posted at <http://www.strebeigh.com/2017november2ilenasilvermanyale.html>.
Articles selected by the editors of their publications for discussion during dinner, 11/2/2017, 6 to 8 pm, Branford College Common Room:
Jacob Stern, "Corey Menafee: Back to Work," Yale Daily News Magazine, 11/14/2016 <http://www.strebeigh.com/ydnmagazinestern2016nov14.html>.
Laura Plata, "Refuge Denied: The Plight of Central-American Women and Children in U.S. Detention Centers," Yale Globalist, 1/22/2017 <http://tyglobalist.org/in-the-magazine/theme/refuge-denied-the-plight-of-central-american-women-and-children-in-u-s-detention-centers/>.
Mark Rosenberg, "From the Ground Up," The New Journal, October 2017 <http://www.thenewjournalatyale.com/2017/10/from-the-ground-up/>.
Olivia Paschal, "Neglect in the County Jails of Arkansas: This isn’t the first time the Lawrence County Jail has been accused of impropriety since its founding in 1965," Politic, 3/8/2017 <http://thepolitic.org/out-of-sight-out-of-mind-abuse-and-neglect-in-the-county-jails-of-arkansas/>.
Tom Cusano, "Drag Her," Yale Herald, 2/3/2017 <www.strebeigh.com/heraldcusano2017feb3.html>.
Will Burns, "Chilling Precision: Cooling and trapping molecules with lasers," Yale Scientific, 6/20/2017 <http://www.yalescientific.org/2017/06/chilling-precision-cooling-and-trapping-molecules-with-lasers/>.
Our plan for the dinner in the Branford Common Room is simple and informal: Everyone is welcome, and those who wish to have dinner will get food from the dining hall and carry it the short distance to the common room. At this gathering, we hope everyone will plan to have a way to look at the six articles--probably by carrying a tablet or laptop or printout. The texts of all articles (selected by the editors of their publications), as well as individual URLs, will be available at <http://www.strebeigh.com/2017november2ilenasilvermanyale.html>.
Right before this 6-8 pm event in the Branford Common Room, Ilena Silverman will have been leading a college tea, in conversation with Emily Bazelon, from 4-5 pm, titled "Editing the New York Times Magazine," sponsored by Branford College and the Poynter Fellowship, with brief information here <https://communications.yale.edu/poynter/ilena-silverman>. Ilena Silverman is the Features Editor at the New York Times Magazine. She started her career at Harper's Magazine and has been an editor at Vogue and GQ. She has worked with Elizabeth Gilbert, Michael Pollan, Ann Patchett, Siddhartha Mukherjee, Nikole Hannah-Jones, Emily Bazelon, Susan Dominus, Jennifer Egan, Te-Nihisi Coates, Paul Tough, Dr. Lisa Sanders, and many others.
Best to all, Fred Strebeigh <fred.strebeigh@yale.edu> (lecturer in English), 10/30/2017
