David Remnick, editor, New Yorker, “National Quality Work in Yale Publications,”
11/12/2015, 6 to 8 pm, Branford College Common Room,
commentary on Yale magazine articles following Branford Master's Tea, same location

The editors of the Politic, Yale Globalist, Yale Herald, Yale Scientific, New Journal, and Yale Daily News Magazine (in collaboration with Fred Strebeigh and with David Remnick) invite members of their staffs and everyone interested in nonfiction writing at Yale to attend a special dinner event, 6 pm to 8 pm, 11/12/2015, in the Branford College Common Room (near the Branford Dining Hall), during which David Remnick will discuss one recent article from each of those six publications.
David Remnick plans to address this question: "What would these articles need to do to rise to true national quality?" This event is designed to give campus writers a chance to hear a major national editor offer challenges intended to lift the quality of writing of all Yale students who wish to write for publication.
Full information as it develops, including a list of articles, will be posted at <http://www.strebeigh.com/2015november12davidremnickyale.html>.
David Remnick will discuss the following pieces, selected by the editors of their publications:
Abigail Bessler, "Goodbye to Salad Days," Yale Daily News Magazine, 11/20/2015 <http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2014/11/20/goodbye-to-salad-days/>.
Anthony Kayruz, "A Slice of the Good Life," Politic, 3/29/2015 <http://thepolitic.org/a-slice-of-the-good-life/>.
Jasmine Horsey, "With Visibility Comes a Cost: To Be Gay in the Balkans," Yale Globalist, 10/18/2015 <http://tyglobalist.org/in-the-magazine/features/with-visibility-comes-a-cost-to-be-gay-in-the-balkans/>.
Jessica Hahne, "Restricting the Robotic Arms Race," Yale Scientific, 7/1/2014 <http://www.yalescientific.org/2014/07/restricting-the-robotic-arms-race/>.
Kohler Bruno, "The Genius out in the cold," Yale Herald, 1/22/2015 <http://genius.it/yaleherald.com/news-and-features/covers/the-genius-out-in-the-cold?>.
Spencer Bokat-Lindell, "Of a Certain Age," The New Journal, September 2015 <http://www.thenewjournalbeta.com/Of_A_Certain_Age.html>.
(See below for texts of all articles; for a Word file with texts of all six articles, click here.)
Our plan for the dinner in the Branford Common Room is simple and informal: Everyone is welcome, and those who wish to have dinner will get food from the dining hall and carry it the short distance to the common room. At this gathering, we hope everyone will plan to have a way to look at the six articles--probably by carrying a tablet or laptop or printout. The texts of all articles (selected by the editors of their publications), as well as individual URLs, will be available in a single file at <http://www.strebeigh.com/2015november12davidremnickyale.html>.
Right before this 6-8 pm event in the Branford Common Room, David Remnick will have been leading a master's tea in the same location, titled "Editing the New Yorker," sponsored by Branford College and the Poynter Fellowship, with brief information here <http://communications.yale.edu/poynter/2015/11/12/david-remnick>.
Best to all, Fred Strebeigh <fred.strebeigh@yale.edu> (lecturer in English), 10/25/2015
