Henry Finder, editorial director, New Yorker,
“National Quality Work in Yale Publications,”
Thursday, 11/14/2019, 6 to 8 pm, Branford College Common Room,
commentary on Yale magazine articles

The editors of Broad Recognition, Down Magazine, New Journal, Politic, Yale Daily News Magazine, Yale Globalist, Yale Herald, and Yale Scientific (in collaboration with Fred Strebeigh and with Henry Finder) invite members of their staffs and everyone interested in nonfiction writing at Yale to attend a special dinner event, 6 pm to 8 pm, 11/14/2019, in the Branford College Common Room (beneath the Branford Dining Hall), during which Henry Finder will discuss one recent article from each of those eight publications.
Henry Finder plans to address this question: "What would these articles need to do to rise to true national quality?" This event is designed to give campus writers a chance to hear a major national editor offer challenges intended to lift the quality of writing of all Yale students who wish to write for publication.
Full information as it develops, including a list of articles, will be posted at <www.strebeigh.com/2019november14henryfinderyale.html>.
Henry Finder will discuss the following pieces, selected by the editors of their publications:

Our plan for the dinner in the Branford Common Room is simple and informal: Everyone is welcome, and those who wish to have dinner will get food from the dining hall and carry it the short distance to the common room. At this gathering, we hope everyone will plan to have a way to look at the eight articles--probably by carrying a tablet or laptop or printout. The texts of all articles (selected by the editors of their publications), as well as individual URLs, will be available via <www.strebeigh.com/2019november14henryfinderyale.html>.
Henry Finder is probably America's best conceptual editor--an editor who helps writers to imagine and shape brilliant articles. Henry edits the writing of Adam Gopnik, Atul Gawande, Henry Louis Gates, Jill Lepore, Larissa MacFarquhar, Malcolm Gladwell, Sarah Stillman (helping her win a National Magazine Award with her first New Yorker article, which she wrote without an assignment), and many more. Henry also edits the writing of his magazine's editor-in-chief, David Remnick, who calls Henry superb and has added that Henry "was certainly good enough for John Updike. He's good enough for me." Henry Finder graduated from Yale (and Branford College) in 1986.
Best to all, Fred Strebeigh <fred.strebeigh@yale.edu> (lecturer in English), 11/10/2019
